The Nigeria Football Federation has
applauded the Golden Eaglets for starting their 2015 African Under-17
Championship campaign with a win over host, Niger Under-17 team, in the
opening match on Sunday at the General Seyni Kountche Stadium in Niamey.
Goals by Victor Osimhen in the 19th
minute and Kelechi Nwakali in the 33th minute ensured that the match
ended 2-0 in favour of Nigeria.
The NFF in a series of tweet via its
Twitter handle hailed the Eaglets for the “great” start, congratulated
the team’s coaches and urged them to do their best to win in their next
match against Guinea Under-17.
“Great start, Eaglets. #goeagletssoar
#goeagletssoar #worldchampions. Guinea’s U17 is next up for the Eaglets
on February 18. #goeagletssoar,” the NFF tweeted on Sunday.
Also on its Instagram page, the NFF
wrote, “#GoldenEaglets begin #ajc with a win over host #Niger with goals
from Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Nwakali. Congratulations to coaches
Amuneke, Baleria and Amadi. #goeagletssoar #NFF #victory #football
#CAF.”
The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, had on
Friday charged the Eaglets to do their best to win the trophy. Pinnick
said as champions of the world, the Eaglets have no business finishing
lower than first place at Niger 2015.
Semi-finalists at the tournament will
represent Africa at the FIFA U-17 World Cup holding in Chile between
October 17 and November 8.
